Italy's polluted Po Valley gasps for fresh air

Wed, 02/27/2019 - 20:52

It is only the end of February, but air pollution in Milan has already exceeded the legal limit for 2019, and the Po Valley swims in a soupy smog. "I can really feel when there's smog, I suffer all winter long," 45-year old Milan local Fabio Cigognini told AFP, describing the asthma-like symptoms which plague him during the cold months. Set against the mountains, far from the ocean and cleansing sea breezes, Italy's major northern city and the Po Valley have always been at a disadvantage, climate wise.

Australia suffers hottest summer on record, little relief in sight

Wed, 02/27/2019 - 20:24

Australia suffered its hottest summer on record from December through February and forecasts show the southern autumn will continue to be drier and warmer than average, the government said Thursday. "After a record hot December and January, it won't come as a surprise that this summer will be our warmest on record," said Andrew Watkins, manager of long-range forecasting at the Bureau of Meteorology. Although the final figures won't be available until Friday, the bureau said it was already clear the average maximum and mean temperature for the three months of summer would for the first time be more than two degrees Celsius higher (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) than long-term averages.

Republican senator opposes Trump EPA pick over climate change

Wed, 02/27/2019 - 19:38

Collins said Wheeler's efforts to roll back standards on emissions blamed for climate change takes the country in the wrong direction. Five Republican senators from oil states, led by Ted Cruz of Texas, sent a letter to Wheeler dated Feb. 11 asking about his biofuels policies, and saying their confirmation votes could hinge on his responses. Wheeler said this month the EPA plans to take actions on the pollutants but stopped short of setting limits until later this year.

Bilibili Billionaire: A Red-Hot Tech Firm Rides Gen Z to Riches

Wed, 02/27/2019 - 19:03

Bililbili’s American depositary receipts have surged 73 percent since its initial public offering in March 2018, the second-best performance in the Nasdaq Golden Dragon China Index of 64 companies that are listed in the U.S. while conducting most of their business in China. For that it can thank China’s Generation Z, a pampered and free-spending cohort that tends not to worry about career prospects or geopolitical upheaval, and whose average member shells out more than $7,000 a year on luxury goods, according to one survey. Social media giant Tencent Holdings Ltd. jumped on the Bilibili bandwagon in October, investing $318 million to increase its stake to 12.3 percent.

The tech firm said in a filing with state regulators that it planned to lay off people from eight different Santa Clara County facilities near its Cupertino, California, headquarters, as of April 16. A company spokesman confirmed that the reduction was from the self-driving car program. Among those laid off were at least two dozen software engineers, including a machine learning engineer, and 40 hardware engineers, according to a letter sent by Apple to California employment regulators earlier this month.
