Yahoo Science News feed latest items - Wed, 03/27/2019 - 10:10

The engines of a luxury cruise ship that narrowly escaped disaster during a storm off Norway on Saturday failed because of relatively low levels of lubricating oil in the engines, the Norwegian Maritime Authority said on Wednesday. The Viking Sky, with almost 1,400 passengers and crew aboard, sent out a mayday signal on Saturday as it drifted in rough waters in the Norwegian Sea to within 100 meters of land. All four engines had failed, but crew managed to restart one of the engines just in time.

The GOP Treats Climate Change Like A Joke. AOC Just Called Them On It.

Yahoo Science News feed latest items - Wed, 03/27/2019 - 09:52

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wants to make something clear: The U.S. will inevitably end up paying for the effects of climate change, which already disproportionately impact marginalized communities. During a meeting of the House Committee on Financial Services on Tuesday, Republican Rep. Sean Duffy said Democrats are only interested in helping "rich liberals" and called Ocasio-Cortez's Green New Deal "absolutely outrageous." The landmark proposal seeks to address climate change and income inequality, but has often been subject of mocking by Republicans, who believe it to be illogical. Regardless, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell forced a vote on the Green New Deal resolution Tuesday, without a hearing.

Yahoo Science News feed latest items - Wed, 03/27/2019 - 09:30

Qualcomm was down as much as 2.9 percent in New York trading, the day after shares rose on a preliminary victory in one of two cases at the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington. Apple was up more than 1 percent after it escaped an import ban on the second of those cases. The mixed rulings “mean that the path to ultimate resolution between Qualcomm and Apple is probably not getting any smoother,” James Faucette, an analyst with Morgan Stanley, said in a note to clients.

Climate change isn't a joke. Republicans should stop treating it like one

Yahoo Science News feed latest items - Wed, 03/27/2019 - 08:48

Rising temperatures are already a clear and present danger to millions of Americans, and Republican policy is making it worse ‘Republicans are doing everything in their power to make sure temperatures keep rising and kneecap the country’s ability to respond adequately to the results.’ Photograph: Brendan McDermid/ReutersFor Republicans, the climate crisis is a joke. On Tuesday in the Senate, Mike Lee, a Republican senator for Utah, spent several minutes on the floor showing pictures of Luke Skywalker on Hoth, giant seahorses and Ronald Reagan shooting off a machine gun whilst mounted atop a dinosaur. This was his bid to “treat the Green New Deal”, which came up for a vote in that body on Tuesday, “with the seriousness it deserves”. By way of a half-hearted alternative he drew on a favorite catch-all solution for the neoliberal set, suggesting woman have more children. For a growing stretch of the country, climate change isn’t a joke but a deadly, imminent threat. Biblical flooding in the midwest this past month has left farmlands devastated and at least 20 people dead, all while the country lacks a comprehensive plan to handle such disasters. The Pine Ridge Reservation is experiencing a devastating state of emergency thanks in part to decades of federal neglect of and divestment from indigenous communities. And there are still people struggling to recover in Puerto Rico from 2017’s devastating hurricane season – efforts being actively undermined by a sociopathic indifference to the fate of that island’s residents. Rising temperatures are already a clear and present danger to millions of Americans, and disastrous Republican policy is already making it worse.By contrast, scientists are unflinching in their recommendations for dealing with the problem: “rapid and far-reaching transitions” in “all aspects of society”, per the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. From the Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell’s sham vote on Tuesday on a Green New Deal to attempts dismantle the remaining benefits of the Affordable Care Act to Rick Perry’s push to bail out flailing coal plants, Republicans are instead doing everything in their power both to make sure temperatures keep rising and to kneecap the country’s ability to respond adequately to the results. The Republican party, of course, voted unanimously against the Green New Deal in Tuesday’s vote; 43 Democrats voted present to show unity. But like many of their Republican colleagues – and a few Democrats who joined Republicans in their no vote – neither Lee nor McConnell speak or vote for themselves. With mountains of campaign donations, their deputized to act on behalf of the coal, oil and gas companies who fund their reelection campaigns; combined, the two senators have accepted more than $6m from fossil fuel interests over the course of their careers. In the 2017-2018 election cycle, more than four-fifths of the energy sector’s $8.5m in donations went to Republican candidates. With the Green New Deal enjoying 81% support among the American voting public, Senate Republicans’ “no” vote on Tuesday mostly proved how out of touch they are with their nominal constituents. For Democrats, it should also be clarifying. If they ever were, today’s Republican party simply isn’t negotiating in good faith – least of all when it comes to climate change. It’s negotiating on behalf of the world’s most toxic companies, and it’s time for Democrats to start treating Republicans like what they are: the political arm of the fossil fuel industry. That’s important because not all of the jabs thrown at the Green New Deal will be as cartoonish as Mike Lee’s or even Mitch McConnell’s. Republicans like Lamar Alexander have already begun to turn their backs on years of old school Republican climate denial, trading in junk science and conspiracy theories for more seemingly respectable solutions. On Tuesday, Alexander announced his own plan to tackle “Ten Grand Challenges” to curb emissions under the banner of a New Manhattan Project for Clean Energy. Alexander hasn’t magically seen the light on climate, and still takes plenty of cash from the fossil fuel industry fueling this problem. He’s just taking a different page out of their playbook. As the Influence Project found recently, multinational fossil fuel companies have spent $1bn since the Paris climate agreement was signed in 2015 trying to greenwash their image through elaborate PR campaigns that paint them as allies in the climate fight. It’s nonsense, of course; the same report found that while these companies plan to spend $115bn on new fossil fuel development in the coming years, they’ll spend just a tiny fraction of that – $3.6bn – on low-carbon investments.Climate change is no joke, as Mike Lee suggests. But the idea that a Republican party stacked to the gills with fossil fuel cash will ever take it seriously certainly is.

India becomes space 'superpower' after shooting down satellite

Yahoo Science News feed latest items - Wed, 03/27/2019 - 08:47

India has joined a club of space superpowers, its prime minister said on Wednesday, after successfully shooting down one of its own satellites with a locally-developed missile.  Narendra Modi made the surprise announcement that India was “now an established space power” in a press conference just a fortnight before the country’s general election.  The leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) added that the missile had destroyed the 190-mile distant satellite in less than three minutes.  He said the test made India the world’s fourth country to have developed and demonstrated this anti-satellite missile capability after China, Russia and the US.  “India has always maintained that space should not be an area for warfare and that remains unchanged in spite of this test”, Mr Modi declared in a televised address to the nation. But India, he stated, also wanted to defend itself and it was with this intent that it had pursued and achieved this missile capability.   Official sources told the Telegraph the missile was a “kinetic kill vehicle” that did not carry any explosives or other devices. They said its “kill” capability arose simply from the fact that it smashed into the target satellite at high speed.  In an official statement India’s foreign ministry declared that the debris generated from the impact would “decay and fall back to earth within weeks” as the test was executed in the “lower atmospher”. The foreign office also stressed that the test was not directed against any country, but added that the capability provided India “credible deterrence against threats to its space-based assets from enemy missiles”. This was a thinly veiled reference to Pakistan and China that similarly destroyed a weather satellite in 2007, creating the largest orbital debris in history.   The Chinese test was also the trigger for India’s defence and space establishments to develop anti-satellite missile capability which the foreign office claimed was not in violation of any international law or treaty to which New Delhi was a signatory.   The timing of Modi’s announcement, however, has raised awkward questions politically as the Model Code of Conduct before elections prohibits all parties from making announcements that could prove electorally advantageous. The opposition parties said the satellite missile test announcement was Modi’s latest bid to ‘garner television time’ and flex India’s military muscle as his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya BJP seeks to retain power in polls beginning on 11 April.
