Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai said Wednesday he was scheduling a vote May 9 on a measure to deny the application of China Mobile USA, described as a Delaware-registered subsidiary that is indirectly controlled by the Chinese government, on national security grounds. Parent company China Mobile is the world’s largest mobile phone operator by customers, with about 899 million subscribers. China Mobile is seeking approval to be listed as a “common carrier” that would enable it to carry international voice traffic between the U.S. and foreign countries, and to connect that traffic with the U.S. telecommunications network.
A manually entered command apparently set off a chain reaction of events that led to last week's crash of an Israeli-built lunar lander during its attempt to touch down on the moon, the mission's managers said today. Preliminary results of an investigation into the crash indicate that the manual command was entered into the spacecraft's computer, which caused the main engine to switch off and stay off during the Beresheet lander's descent. That led to the failure of the nearly $100 million lunar mission, which took its name from the Hebrew words for "In the Beginning." The privately funded SpaceIL… Read More

The NDP became the first one-term government in Alberta history when the United Conservative Party tapped into voter concerns about the economy and a struggling energy sector to win a majority. The UCP were elected or leading vote counts in 63 out of 87 seats as of midday on Wednesday. The opposition Alberta Liberals won 40 percent of the 1993 vote but none of their legislators had any government experience.
Musk's Boring Co has proposed a privately funded 35.3-mile "loop project" that would include twin underground tunnels transporting passengers at speeds of up to 150 miles per hour. The company says passengers would be able to travel from downtown Washington to Baltimore in as little as 15 minutes. Musk, who also leads electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc and rocket company SpaceX, is seeking to revolutionize transportation by digging tunnels, including one that would connect downtown Chicago and the city's main airport.
Scientists have managed to restore cell function in the brains of pigs hours after they died, in a breakthrough Wednesday that experts said threw into question the very notion of what makes animals -- or even humans -- alive.
In the beginning, more than 13 billion years ago, the Universe was an undifferentiated soup of three simple, single-atom elements. "It was the beginning of chemistry," said David Neufeld, a professor at John Hopkins University and co-author of a study published Wednesday detailing how -- after a multi-decade search -- scientists finally detected the elusive molecule in space. "The formation of HeH+ was the first step on a path of increasing complexity in the Universe," as momentous a shift as the one from single-cell to multicellular life on Earth, he told AFP.

Just days after the publication of scientific results from NASA’s first “Year in Space” mission, the space agency says two more extended stays on the International Space Station are in the works. One of the missions will set a world record for the longest spaceflight by a woman, and it’s already in progress. NASA astronaut Christina Koch, who went into orbit in March, is having her tour of duty extended to 328 days. That exceeds the 288 days spent in orbit by NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, the current record-holder among women astronauts for continuous time in space. And it comes… Read More
