FCC Chief Moves to Deny China Mobile's Bid to Enter U.S. Market

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai said Wednesday he was scheduling a vote May 9 on a measure to deny the application of China Mobile USA, described as a Delaware-registered subsidiary that is indirectly controlled by the Chinese government, on national security grounds. Parent company China Mobile is the world’s largest mobile phone operator by customers, with about 899 million subscribers. China Mobile is seeking approval to be listed as a “common carrier” that would enable it to carry international voice traffic between the U.S. and foreign countries, and to connect that traffic with the U.S. telecommunications network.

A manually entered command apparently set off a chain reaction of events that led to last week's crash of an Israeli-built lunar lander during its attempt to touch down on the moon, the mission's managers said today. Preliminary results of an investigation into the crash indicate that the manual command was entered into the spacecraft's computer, which caused the main engine to switch off and stay off during the Beresheet lander's descent. Musk's Boring Co has proposed a privately funded 35.3-mile "loop project" that would include twin underground tunnels transporting passengers at speeds of up to 150 miles per hour. The company says passengers would be able to travel from downtown Washington to Baltimore in as little as 15 minutes. Musk, who also leads electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc and rocket company SpaceX, is seeking to revolutionize transportation by digging tunnels, including one that would connect downtown Chicago and the city's main airport.

"It was the beginning of chemistry," said David Neufeld, a professor at John Hopkins University and co-author of a study published Wednesday detailing how -- after a multi-decade search -- scientists finally detected the elusive molecule in space.
